There’s no doubt that yoghurt is a popular product in our supermarkets, be it to have with breakfast, as a snack or in your favourite smoothie.
Many of us also particularly like the popular fruit-flavoured yoghurt, often sold in small tubs, and understandably so. Yoghurt has been sold as a very healthy product for decades, and many know about the great health benefits of eating fruit. Even 4-year-old kids know that an apple a day helps keep the doctor away! Finally, having fruit-flavoured yoghurt in a small tub can simply be a very convenient snack on-the-go.
However, is fruit-flavoured yoghurt always a great choice? How much does the marketed ‘fruit’ component actually comprise of real fruit?
Unfortunately, no matter which commercial fruit-flavoured yoghurt you buy from the supermarket, even though it may contain some real fruit (with the amount varying depending on which product you buy), it’s normally only in a very small quantity (5-9%). Most of the fruit component you will get is actually fruit-flavoured sugar. Not so fruity after all…
So… what to do if you’re after some delicious fruity yoghurt?
My suggestion?
Cut up your favourite fruit and serve it with plain low-fat yoghurt
Or, if you think cutting up fruit takes too long or is a bit plain for you, try serving the yoghurt with canned fruit in juice (not syrup)
Your new and improved fruity yoghurt is guaranteed to have lots more natural fruit, and you can tailor it depending on what fruit you like most, is in season, or have handy at the time!
